  • Update of Decathlon Records for John Howe - Rhondda.

Thank you Glyn Price for providing details and evidence of the records Set by John Howe - Rhondda AC - in the DecM55 with score of 5894 in 1997 and DecM60 6610 in 2002. • Welsh Masters Athletics - We are working to arrange Events for you.

The WMAL board are working to arrange a Championship and return to T&F events when regulations around Covid restrictions allow. It has been a long time since we were all able to get together, compete and enjoy our sport. As hopefully we move from Phase 1 restrictions to Phase 2 on the 22nd April, where 30 can gather and compete, we have to look forward to the more realistic Amber Alert Level 2 where up to 50 can. At this time, it will be more feasible to arrange some events and later in the year we hope to be able to have a Championship when the Alert level goes to Green and up 100 people can gather to compete. The provisional date for the Championships is 8th August. Don't forget that you will need to be a member to compete. Keep a look out on the WMAL website, Facebook and Twitter feed for confirmation of dates and entry details. The Inter Area Track and Field challenge is set for 18th July so it would be good to get some Return to T&F events on the calendar before then. The BMAF Championships are set for 21/22 August.

  • Gary Halpin - We are sad to read that Gary has died.

Former Ireland prop [Irish Times] and Brecon AC thrower Gary Halpin dies at the age of just 55. As a former Irish rugby international he scored a famous try against the All-Blacks in 1995. Gary was a member of Brecon AC from 2010-2016 and during this time took part in Welsh Masters league events as well as Championships. He was a very pleasant and entertaining guy who was always willing (and able!) to help fellow throwers. The Christ College pupils who came to the club said that he was an inspiration - an old fashioned character who perhaps didn't worry too much about protocols and administration! Gary had represented Ireland in the hammer at the 1987 World Athletic Championships and 24 years later at the age of 45 he finished 2nd in the World Masters Championships at Sacramento with a best throw of 53m71. A larger than life character taken too early! Gary in the middle, with John Davies on the right and Phil Olsen on the left.

  • Back through time - THE JOURNEY TO BALLYMENA 1997 and 2002

The first time I went to Ballymena was in 1997, I was running in the W35 Team and Liz Clarke was the Team Manager. This was in the days when Welsh Masters organised transport to the event and they had arranged for a bus to leave Cardiff and pick up runners from North Wales at Knutsford Service Station on the M6. Then the bus would travel upto Stranraer in Scotland, and catch the ferry to Larne and then onto Ballymena. This must have taken an awful lot of organising and I was looking forward not only to the weekend running for Wales but the journey itself was going to be an adventure.
