The Pen-Y-Ghent 12.2km/500m race was organised by Settle Harriers.
The women’s race started at 1:30pm in a torrential downpour which soon cleared to leave clear and quite warm conditions for a relatively fast running race route.
First home for North Wales was Ruth Calcraft (Run Free Fell Runners) in 26th position overall in a time of 1:05:01 followed by: 31st Catrin Donnelly (Eryri Harriers) 1:05:59 and 39th Efa Baines (Eryri Harriers) 1:07:53.
Unfortunately, despite travelling to the event, Joanne Henderson (Denbigh Harriers) had to withdraw due to illness. North Wales were placed 9th team overall in an event won by Nancy Scott (Aldershot & Farnham/Surrey) in a very good time of 54:35. Yorkshire won the Inter-Counties team title ahead of Cumbria and Surrey.
The Men's race.
The men’s race started at 2:00pm in much better conditions compared to the women’s race start. Tom Wood (Eryri Harriers) led North Wales home in 17th position overall in a time of 50:47 followed by: 44th Matthew Roberts (Eryri Orienteers) 53:54. 49th Rhys Jones (Hebog) 54:06 & despite suffering with a severe stitch on the descent, 60th Kieran Wynne-Kattanach Eryri Harriers) 55:02.
North Wales men were placed 8th overall in the event won by Ross Gollan (Scotland North) in another very good time of 47:53. Yorkshire won the Inter-Counties team title ahead of Lancashire and Derbyshire.Overall, a great effort from our North Wales athletes against quality opposition.
